VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Please reach out to ykspeedskating@gmail.com if you are interested in helping out with the YK Speedskating Club. We are currently looking for the following roles to be filled:

  • Board Position: Fundraising Coordinator 
  • Coaching and on ice support: as well as general parental support on the ice, we are always looking for coaches with experience in speed skating, who would be interested in sharing their knowledge with the next generation. 
  • Equipment Manager: we are looking for someone who can inventory our equipment, including the skates, safety mats and other gear that has accumulated over the years.

RENTAL SKATES

The Yellowknife Speed Skating Club has rental skates available for use for the speed skating season. Skate rentals are $250/season with a $125 refund at the end of the season, if the skates are retuned in good condition. Skate rental nights will occur at the start of the season on Sunday, September 13th from 3:30 to 5:00 pm and on Monday, September 14th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.  Please see the Club’s Skate Rental Policy for more information.

DROP-IN ADULT SPEED SKATING – Winter 2026

The Yellowknife Speed Skating Club held drop-in adult speed skating in January 2026 it was a 4 week opportunity. This may be back in the fall of 2026, stay tuned.

These drop-in classes are for adults who can already skate but are looking to improve and learn speed skating techniques. It is also open to any adults that already know how to speed skate and want to get back out on the ice. 

Coach: various coaches will be available throughout the sessions to provide tips on the ice to any skaters that attend

Cost:  $10/drop-in session (this fee will be waived for anyone who regularly volunteers with YKSSC as a coach or helper on the ice)

Ice Times:   Sunday 5:00 – 6:00 PM for 4 weeks (January 11, 18, 25 and February 1). Please note that at the end of the class participants will be required to help with moving the safety mats off the ice. 

Where: the drop-in sessions will take place at the multi-plex on the Ed Jeske Ice.

Required Equipment:

  • speed skates or hockey skates (if you don’t have speed skates and want to try some out, the club has skates you can borrow, however, our adult sizes are limited so please bring back up skates incase we do not have your size) 
  • Helmet, CSA-approved or ASTM F 1849 certified (no bicycle helmets)
  • Knee pads (not hard style)
  • Shin pads
  • Bib-style neck guard
  • Leather/cut-resistant gloves
  • Shatter-resistant non-tinted safety glasses with safety straps (prescription eyeglasses do not require additional safety glasses but do require a safety strap)
  • Cut-resistant ankle protection
  • Skin suit – recommended or appropriate athletic clothing
  • Cut-resistant under suit or skin suit – recommended

Waiver: All participants will be required to sign a waiver before the start of each drop in session.
