DROP-IN ADULT SPEED SKATING JANUARY 2026

The Yellowknife Speed Skating Club is happy to announce that this January 2026 there will be drop-in adult speed skating opportunities for 4 weeks. These drop-in classes are for adults who can already skate but are looking to improve and learn speed skating techniques. It is also open to any adults that already know how to speed skate and want to get back out on the ice. 

Coach: various coaches will be available throughout the sessions to provide tips on the ice to any skaters that attend

Cost:  $10/drop-in session (this fee will be waived for anyone who regularly volunteers with YKSSC as a coach or helper on the ice)

Ice Times:   Sunday 5:00 – 6:00 PM for 4 weeks (January 11, 18, 25 and February 1). Please note that at the end of the class participants will be required to help with moving the safety mats off the ice. 

Where: the drop-in sessions will take place at the mullet-plex on the Ed Jeske Ice.

Required Equipment:

  • speed skates or hockey skates (if you don’t have speed skates and want to try some out, the club has skates you can borrow, however, our adult sizes are limited so please bring back up skates incase we do not have your size) 
  • Helmet, CSA-approved or ASTM F 1849 certified (no bicycle helmets)
  • Knee pads (not hard style)
  • Shin pads
  • Bib-style neck guard
  • Leather/cut-resistant gloves
  • Shatter-resistant non-tinted safety glasses with safety straps (prescription eyeglasses do not require additional safety glasses but do require a safety strap)
  • Cut-resistant ankle protection
  • Skin suit – recommended or appropriate athletic clothing
  • Cut-resistant under suit or skin suit – recommended

Waiver: All participants will be required to sign a waiver before the start of each drop in session.

RENTAL SKATES

A rental fee of $125 is charged for the use of the skates for the skating season. with a $125 deposit that will be retuned at the end of the season.
